SERVICE OF COMMUNION FOR THE NEW YEAR*

RINGING THE BELL – GATHERING AT THE TABLE ORGAN PRELUDE
WELCOME

CENTERING PRAYER (Chalice Worship)
Everlasting God of all the years, you have been our companion
through all the mysteries of the past to uphold us when we knew not the way. Take our hand now and share our pilgrimage to an unknown future. Open our eyes to recognize your presence with us this day that we may give you praise and celebrate the goodness of your guidance. Renew us. Refresh us. Fill us with your Spirit; we pray in Christ’s name. Amen.

CALL TO WORSHIP (Sourcebook of Worship Resources) New every morning is God’s love,
poured out upon us,
washing away the past,

Shining hope upon our path,

awakening a joy deep within,

renewing the earth.

Great is God’s faithfulness;

God’s mercy never ends.

A NEW YEAR’S PRAYER (Words For Worship – Arlene Mark)
As our year changes, we come to you, O God.
You, O God, are from everlasting to everlasting. You do not change.
Your steadfast love is our stability.
We stop and consider as we begin this New Year.
There are old fears, but new boldness; there are old controversies, but new options; there are old problems, but new potential.
You are a God of hope; show us new dreams.
You are a God of promise; show us new possibilities.
How great is your wisdom and knowledge. Your ways are beyond our comprehension. Teach us.
Your Word is full of wisdom. Your Spirit moves among us in unexpected
ways. Teach us to think your thoughts, O God, for to understand you is

better than offering gold, and to follow your way is better than bringing jewels.
As we join the seekers for the Christ Child, lead us by the light of Christ’s teachings.

Show us the way; guide us by your light. We bow down to worship you;
we bring our lives as gifts to praise you.
By your grace, enable us to serve you, we worship and glorify you.
We pray in the name of the One who led the wise men and still leads those who seek him. Amen.

BENEDICTION

There is a time and a season for everything.

A time to gather together and a time to depart.

Bible p. 537

blue hymnal No. 713

A time to make promises and a time to bring these promises to life.

A time to receive and a time to receive what we have received.

Go enfolded in the love of God, emboldened by the call of Christ, and empowered by the Spirit to embrace the year ahead.
