Barbara Wells

Director, Bell Choir Barbara Wells
Director, Bell Choir

Barbara founded the handbell choir in 1997 with two octaves of bells and eight people to ring them. Today the choir has three octaves of bells and three octaves of hand chimes, requiring ten “ringers.”

Barbara grew up in a musical family, singing together around the piano, on camping trips, and on Sunday drives. She sang in choirs at the Presbyterian Church in New Brunswick, New Jersey as a teenager and continued throughout her years in New Jersey. When the church formed a bell choir, Barbara learned to ring.

Singing in her college chapel choir, the Rutgers University Choir, a Bach chamber choir, the Shrewsbury, NJ chorale, and the summer program at Westminster Choir College with Robert Shaw, contributed to Barbara’s musical knowledge and directing techniques. Since coming to Cape Cod, Barbara has sung with the Chatham Chorale, a madrigal group, Women's Song, and the Chancel Choir at Dennis Union Church, to name a few.

Barbara earned her undergraduate degree from Douglass College at Rutgers University, studied at Trenton State College, and attained a Master of Arts degree from the University of Oregon. She taught mathematics in New Jersey high schools for 40 years before retiring to the Cape. She resides in Dennis and is Assistant to the Librarian at the Dennis Memorial Library.
