Dennis Union Church is an Open and Affirming Congregation – All are welcome!

Building the Beloved Community

On October 19, Dennis Union Church will host a day-long workshop on building community through singing and studying Kingian non-violence. The day begins at 9 am with a morning session: learn about non-violence as a way of life with leaders from the Connecticut Center for Nonviolence discussing non-violence as a framework for conflict reconciliation and community building developed by Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. Often mistaken for being simply the absence or opposite of violence, nonviolence is, rather, a systematic framework of both concepts and strategies to reduce conflict and potential violence, promoting peace in the community.

After a noon lunch break, our afternoon session is led by Music That Makes Community presenters Nehemiah Luckett and Conie Borchardt, who will offer an afternoon of paperless communal singing and conversation exploring how singing together can create connection, courage, and change. As part of the Music that Makes Community residency, Nehemiah and Conie will be leading music for Sunday morning worship at 10 a.m. and follow it with a forum to reflect on our experiences on Sunday morning.

You do not need to be a singer to participate!  All are welcome!  The workshop will run from 9 am to 4 pm. There is no fee to participate but advance registration is needed.  (Donations are welcome to cover lunch.) Please call the church office at 508-385-3543 to register.
